Local regulations for hosting in the Rheingau

For individuals hosting homes in the Rheingau, this article provides targeted information on applicable local regulations. It is imperative, as stipulated by the OH-Stay.com article "Hosting in Germany," that hosts independently verify and adhere to all relevant obligations. While this document serves as a foundational reference, it is neither exhaustive nor a substitute for professional legal or tax counsel. Hosts are advised to regularly confirm the timeliness of all laws and procedures. Should complexities arise, direct engagement with the Government of Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis or a local advisor (e.g., an attorney or tax professional) is recommended.

Tourism fee

Since 1 July 2021, selected municipalities in the Rheingau region collect a tourism fee for temporary visitors to support local touristic infrastructure. The tourism fee applies in the following municipalities:

  • Lorch am Rhein

  • Rüdesheim am Rhein

  • Oestrich-Winkel

  • Kiedrich

  • Eltville am Rhein

  • Walluf

  • Hochheim am Main

All guests who are not permanent residents of the respective municipality are subject to the tourism fee, excluding business travelers.

Tourism fee rate

The daily rate is currently set at €2 per person. Exemptions include children under 18, business travelers, participants in school and student trips, patients in hospitals, and individuals unable to leave their accommodation for medical reasons. Exact exemptions are detailed in the local statutes of each municipality.

Registration obligations

Hosts in the listed municipalities are required to report guests to the local administration. This ensures compliance with local regulations regarding short-term rentals and tourism fees.
