Hosting in the State of Styria

This article provides specific information about local laws that apply to people who host their homes in the State of Styria. Our Hosting in Austria guide states that it is your responsibility to verify and comply with any obligations that apply to you as a host. Like all our guides, this information is not exhaustive and does not constitute legal or tax advice. You should always check with a qualified advisor to ensure that laws and procedures are current.

Some of the laws that may affect you can be complex. Contact the Styrian government directly or consult a local advisor, such as an attorney or tax professional, if you have questions.

Short-Term Rental Regulations

Please contact the City of Styria for more information about the various laws, regulations, and requirements that may apply to you as a host in Styria.

Hosts in Graz can also contact the city administration for more information about Styria’s tourism laws.

Holiday Apartment Tax

Styria’s Overnight and Holiday Apartment Tax Law introduced a visitor’s tax (Nächtigungsabgabe) on October 1, 2018. Any guest who stays in commercial or private overnight accommodation for a fee must pay this tax, with certain exceptions such as children under the age of 15.

Collection and Payment

Hosts are responsible for collecting the holiday apartment tax and remitting it to the city. You must register your listing with the city before you are allowed to collect the tax.

Rate

As of November 2018, the holiday apartment tax is €2.50 per person per night.

Exceptions

The following groups are exempt from paying the tax (a complete list of exemptions can be found in Section 3 of the Overnight and Holiday Apartment Tax Law):

  • Children and adolescents up to the age of 15

  • Pupils and accompanying persons staying in accommodation as part of a school course (e.g., ski courses, school trips, training courses) or for the purpose of school or vocational training

  • Students and teachers of a university or university of applied sciences with temporary residence at their place of study

Tourism Interest Contribution

Hosts located in designated tourism communities (classified as Classes A to C according to local regulations) are required to pay an annual tourism interest contribution (Tourismusinteressenbeitrag) in accordance with the Styrian Tourism Act.

The amount is calculated based on:

  • The contribution group

  • The local classification (A–C)

  • The annual turnover

If you are unsure whether your municipality is part of a tourism community, check with your local town hall. Hosts in Graz can conveniently submit the tourism interest contribution online.
